How do I write a cover letter with AI?

Paste the job advert and three or four true points about your experience into Claude or ChatGPT, and ask for a short, warm, professional letter that doesn't invent anything. Then personalise it with a detail about the company and make sure it sounds like you.

Copy-and-paste prompt

Swap the bits in [square brackets] for your own details.

How to do it

  1. Open Claude or ChatGPT and start a new chat.
  2. Copy the prompt below and replace everything in [square brackets] with your details.
  3. Read the answer and ask follow-up questions to adjust it.
  4. Check anything important yourself, then save or print the result.

Dear Ms Patel, I'm applying for the Office Coordinator role at Greenleaf Architects. For the past three years I've run the front desk at a busy dental practice, managing diaries for six clinicians and handling over 80 patient calls a day. I was drawn to Greenleaf by your community housing projects… I'd welcome the chance to discuss how I can help keep your office running smoothly. Kind regards, Jordan Lee
