How do I use AI to write a complaint letter?

Give Claude or ChatGPT the company, what you bought, when, what went wrong and the outcome you want, and ask for a short, polite, firm letter. Check your actual rights on an official consumer-advice site, as AI may get local law wrong.

Copy-and-paste prompt

Swap the bits in [square brackets] for your own details.

Help me write a complaint to [company] about [problem, e.g. faulty item / poor service]. I bought it on [date] for [price]. What happened: [details]. I want [refund/repair/replacement]. I live in [country] – mention my consumer rights in general terms only, and keep the letter under 250 words, polite and firm.

How to do it

  1. Open Claude or ChatGPT and start a new chat.
  2. Copy the prompt below and replace everything in [square brackets] with your details.
  3. Read the answer and ask follow-up questions to adjust it.
  4. Check anything important yourself, then save or print the result.

Subject: Faulty kettle – request for refund (order 58213) Dear Customer Services, On 2 September I bought a kettle from your website for £39.99. After three weeks it stopped heating and the switch light no longer comes on. It has been used normally. As the item is faulty, I would like a full refund. Please let me know how to return it. I look forward to your reply within 14 days. Yours faithfully, Sam Taylor
